SAC baseball clinches second in CISAA playoffs

By Jake Courtepatte

A battle for top seed in the Canadian Independent School Athletic Association's varsity baseball league came down to a tiebreaker Monday afternoon.
Both the St. Andrew's Saints and St. Michael's College Blues entered the game on SAC's diamond with matching 2 – 0 records, with the winner taking the number one seed position into next week's league championship.
By far the two heavyweights of the West division, it was the defense and work on the mound that ruled the play through the first three innings, with the Saints jumping out to a 2 – 0 lead.
The Blues rallied back in the top of the fourth to take a 3 – 2 lead of their own, before three doubles in a row in the Saint's half regained the lead for the home squad. An error at the plate gave the Saints a 5 – 3 lead after four.
Runs were traded back and forth in the fifth, with each team holding the lead in their half of the inning. St. Mike's went up again after two straight walks with the bases loaded, before the Saints cashed in two of their own with a pair of heavy hits to send the game to the sixth and final inning up 7 – 6.
It was a wild pitch that tied the game once again, while the Saints failed to muster up any more offense to leave the diamond in a 7 – 7 tie.
Both teams put up astonishing numbers throughout the season, though St. Mike's outscored SAC in total runs 44 – 36 and take first in the West.
The Saints clinched a playoff spot last week in an 11 – 1 drubbing of the Crescent School Coyotes, and earlier in May toppled the Country Day School Cyclones 18 – 3.
Upper Canada College finished first in the East with a perfect 3 – 0 record.
Playoff action will go next Wednesday at the SAC diamond.
