The best of the best in the York-Simcoe Hockey League took on their Lakeshore Minor Hockey counterparts in Whitby on Saturday, coming out on top by the narrowest of margins.
Retaking bragging rights after Lakeshore decisively won the annual Challenge in 2016, York-Simcoe came out on top by a score of 46 – 44 in the battle between two of the GTA’s largest minor hockey leagues, winning ten series compared to Lakeshore’s nine.
The Atom AA Aurora Tigers, champions of York-Simcoe after a five-game series with the Markham Waxers in late March, claimed victory in a three-game series with the Whitby Wildcats.
After a decisive 4 – 0 victory to start the day at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, the home team took Game Two to send the series to a winner-take-all game. Aurora earned the two points for York-Simcoe with a 1 – 0 win.
In the Atom A battle, Aurora put up a pair of strong efforts against the Wildcats but eventually fell by scores of 2 – 1 and 3 – 1.
The Wildcats also got the best of the Minor Bantam A Tigers, who after splitting the first two games of their series fell 1 – 0 to the home team in the final game of the day.
