The brackets are set for another fall season of thrilling high school football in York Region.
Four teams will vie for the title of top high school football team in the area, an honour the undefeated Huron Heights Warriors know quite well.
Consistently ranked within the top twenty nationwide by www.canadafootballchat.com, the reigning YRAA champs take a 6 – 0 record into their semifinal matchup with the fourth place King City Lions on Friday.
King City, who finished the regular season with a 22 – 3 win over Villanova College last week, ended their first season of Tier 1 ball with a record of 3 – 3. Their only game of the season against the Warriors came in late September, when the Warriors won on the road 55 – 6.
Joining the Warriors and Lions in the semifinals are the Bill Crothers Colts and St. Max Mustangs who, aside from the Warriors, provided the most impressive display of offense throughout the season. The two teams met in the first game of the season, with the Mustangs coming out on top of the Colts 14 – 7.
The Mustangs closed out the season last week with a 34 – 0 win against the division’s weakest opponent, Markham District, who finished 0 – 6 on the year.
Veteran quarterback Ben Langlois threw a handful of touchdown passes in the game at Markham, with majors from Jack Camplin, Matthew Vassos, Nolan Lovegrove, and Ron Boshoer.
Wrapping up an impressive regular season record of 5 – 1, the Mustangs only loss came at the hands of the Warriors in early October, a game that was in St. Max’s control until the final quarter.
The rivalry between the two most dominant teams in York Region football is just beginning to heat up: neither team gave up more than 25 points in total this season, with around half of those points coming in their regular season matchup.
Huron Heights routed the Mustangs in last year’s YRAA championship on home turf, a 42 – 3 game in St. Max’s first trip to the Tier 1 finals in a six-year program tenure. The Warriors have reached the Tier 1 finals for twelve straight years, winning seven times.
Huron is currently ranked eleventh in the nation by CanadaFootballChat, while the Mustangs make an appearance in the 41st spot.
Markham District and Villanova College will also meet Friday in a battle of the YRAA basement.
