Remediation of former Works Yard site moves forward

The cleanup of the Town of Aurora’s former Works Yard on Scanlon Court is set to get underway.
Council is set to award a $164,498 tender to begin the remediation work on the site which, after over 40 years in service as the nucleus of the Town’s Public Works Program, including salt storage, was vacated earlier this year for Aurora’s new Joint Operations Centre (JOC) just up the street on Industrial Parkway North.
The Town sold the Scanlon lands this past summer and the revenues will help offset the cost of the new JOC, but land and soil remediation taken on by the Town is a condition that has to be met before the deal can fully close.
“In order to meet the requirements of an agreement of sale for the 9 Scanlon Court property, the Town is to complete all environmental site investigations, reporting and site remediation necessary,” said Glen McArthur, Municipal Engineer for the Town of Aurora, in a report before Council for final ratification this week.
Discussing the matter last week at the Committee level, Councillors said they were pleased this was getting underway and that a single contractor would be able to provide both the plan and the remediation to rehabilitate the land.
“The bulk of the work is the removal of the existing fuel storage tanks on the site,” said Ilmar Simanovskis, Aurora’s Director of Infrastructure.
