MP's REPORT: A Great Start to Fall!

By Kyle Peterson, MP

Newmarket-Aurora

As with every October, this month was an incredibly busy one.

From the last summer days, to Thanksgiving and cleaning the yard for winter, October is always a month of transition. Along with Parliament, our community has been busy, and there is a lot to look forward to coming up.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all participants of the 2016 Easter Seals Dancing Stars Fundraiser which was held on October 5, 2016. The event raised over $90,000 – setting a North American record.

The funds raised will send 50 children living with disabilities to a summer camp in 2017. Most of the dancers were members of our community without any backgrounds in dance, so congratulations for not only learning a new skill in such a short time, but also wowing the crowd during your performances.

And a special congratulations to Andrea Peterson whom won the Judge's Choice Award.

All dancers, organizers and participants should be proud. A special shout-out to AJ Kleiman, Easter Seals Ambassador, for his awesome speech.

This past weekend, I attended “An Affair to Remember”, the 5th Annual Hillary House Ball, a successful fundraising event with proceeds going towards the preservation and restoration of the Hillary House, a significant local landmark and a national historic site. Thanks to all members involved in the preservation of Hillary House. Your work is incredibly valuable to our community and its history.

This past month proved busy not only in the community, but also on Parliament Hill. I was pleased to speak about Bill C-26, an act to amend the Canada Pension Plan, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board Act and the Income Tax Act. Part 1 of the enactment amends the Canada Pension plan. This Bill will strengthen the Canadian Pension Plan, ensuring that all Canadians retire with dignity and security.

I also gave a speech on Bill C-29, which will implement Budget 2016. I was pleased to play an active role in the debate in the House of Commons, helping to grow our economy for the future.

Finally, I am really looking forward to the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame Grand Re-opening on Saturday November 5, and am looking forward to seeing many of you there!

November will also be a busy month for all of us, I'm sure. Nonetheless, I do hope you will take some time to participate in Remembrance Week ceremonies. We all owe so much to our veterans and our armed forces personnel, and this month is the ideal time to show that honour and pride.

Lest we forget.
