New hours and new drives for Aurora Food Pantry

By Brock Weir

Fall is in the air and that means new hours and new ways to help the Aurora Food Pantry.
Beginning October 1, the Aurora Food Pantry, which is located on Industrial Parkway South, will be open the first and third Tuesday mornings of every month from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m., the second, third and fourth Thursday evening of the month from 5.30 – 8 p.m., and every Saturday morning from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon.
“We are hoping to cater to more residents with weekday hours and an earlier opening on Thursdays to coincide with the York Region Transit schedule,” says Aundrea Larocque, Executive Director of the Aurora Food Pantry. “Each month, the Pantry serves over 600 residents and provides them with five to seven days of nutritionally balanced food. 40 per cent of the clients we serve are children and youth.
“Residents can support the Food Pantry with donations of non-perishable health food options or monetary gifts, which we use to purchase milk, eggs, cheese, butter, meats and fresh fruits and vegetables.”
While you find out the many ways you can give to the Food Pantry by visiting their website at aurorafoodpantry.ca, you will have a number of opportunities to donate to them this weekend.
This Saturday, October 1, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests will be accepting non-perishable food items at No Frills on Yonge Street at Murray Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Items particularly needed by Food Pantry clients, they say, are baby food, formula and large diapers, as well as canned peas, green and yellow beans, canned fruit cocktail, peaches and pears, creamed corn, canned tomatoes, instant potatoes, noodles and rice, children's snacks, cookies, and baking supplies.
Starting at 11 a.m. on the other side of Town, the Aurora Tigers will be on hand at the Real Canadian Superstore at Bayview Avenue and St. John's Sideroad to help you pack your groceries, escort you back out to your car, pack your vehicle and take the cart back to the store, all the while autographing jerseys, taking photos with young fans and collecting donations for the Food Pantry.
