MP's REPORT: A Series of Historic Events!

By Kyle Peterson, MP

Newmarket-Aurora

This month was marked by many exciting and historic events!

As most of you will recall, President Barack Obama addressed the House of Commons on Wednesday, June 29. For only the ninth time in history, the House of Commons welcomed an official address by the President of the United States.

In President Obama`s speech, he highlighted the importance of our relationship with our American neighbours, explaining that, “We [Americans] could not ask for a better friend or ally than Canada… We see ourselves in each other.”

President Obama touched on many topics during his 50-minute address, including strengthening indigenous relations in Canada, gender equality, climate change, our global war on terror, and the acceptance of refugees – Canada as an example for the world. His address was inspiring and thoughtful: Given the state of global affairs, President Obama spoke confidently about the way forward, making it clear that our relationship with the United States remains steadfast and of utmost importance in battling the many issues we face ahead.

Having listened to his reinforcement of these key issues and our special relationship with those who share our border, I am even more excited to return to the House of Commons in the Fall to continue our hard work for Canadians.

Returning home for the summer has gotten off to an exciting start. On July 1, my family and I celebrated Canada Day across the community. I enjoyed attending and participating in so many special celebrations, including the Town of Aurora's opening ceremonies and celebrations throughout the day.

I would like to thank all the organizers of these fantastic events – my family and I had a great day in the community with all those who participated.

Another historic event happened this past month that I was honoured to be a part of. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marched in the Pride Parade in Toronto on July 3 – the first Prime Minister to ever march at this important event.

As many of you know, June was Pride Month, and I was honored to walk beside our Prime Minister and many fellow Members of Parliament in celebration of LGBT community in Toronto.

In official news, during the month of July, families across Canada will be getting their first installment of the tax-free Canada Child Benefit (CCB). I am excited about the rollout of this benefit for many reasons. The CCB puts more money into the hands of families who need it most, lifting almost 300,000 children out of poverty. This benefit will be giving 9 out of 10 families more help with the high cost of raising their kids. I am grateful that the CCB will help families in need in our community.

As families enjoy their summer, I am hopefully that the CCB will help families get more out of the time they share together, or help get more children involved in community activities or local camp programs.

In closing, I am already enjoying and looking forward to the rest of the summer in our community. My focus as your Member of Parliament remains on our community and I am excited to spend my summer enjoying all the wonderful community events over the next few weeks.
