As the saying goes, time flies when you are having fun! As your representative, I am very proud of the work the Liberal government has accomplished this year in the 42nd session of Parliament. I wanted to highlight a few key accomplishments that stand out for me. Before 2015 came to a close, the Liberal government passed its first major bill – the Middle Class Tax Cut. A promise made, and a promise kept from the 2015 election. This tax cut is already helping more families by getting more money into the pockets of those who need it most. In March, our Government delivered Budget 2016, a plan to change the lives of many Canadians. In particular, a cornerstone of this budget was the Canada Child Benefit that will begin rolling out this summer, beginning on July 1. This summer brings another incredible investment - the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) project. CSJ has approved over 263 jobs in the community of Newmarket-Aurora, committing over $810,000 in federal funding to provide more jobs for those who need it most: young Canadians. As part of my role on Parliament Hill, I serve on the Standing Committee on International Trade. An important responsibility during my time in Ottawa was spent studying the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to travel across Western and Central Canada to hear from stakeholders, citizens, and experts on this matter. I am looking forward to continuing our work on behalf of all Canadians this fall. More recently, Parliament has celebrated some historic moments and events. On June 8 this year, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the First Meeting on the Hill. On that day in 1866, the Legislature of the Province of Canada met for the last time in the original Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. This was a historic moment as the then elected representatives for Ontario and Quebec both prepared to turn “Bytown” into the capital city of Ottawa, and debated the British North America Act which would become our founding legislation on July 1, 1867. A present-day historic moment took place this June as well. For the first time, the Pride Flag was raised on Parliament Hill in support of Pride Month. I am very happy to be part of a government so committed to protecting and respecting the rights of the LGBTQ community. We know that strength and success in our country comes from community and working together to make good things happen. On this note, I would also like to take a moment to thank everyone who reached out to my office with kind words, concerns, and opinions on Bills and important issues this session. On a personal note, I hope you have an opportunity this summer to spend some quality time with your family and friends. Our summers are too short, so we need to make the most of them.
