MP’s Report

By Leona Alleslev, MP
Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

May has been a very busy month discussing new and historic bills in the House of Commons, working on Committee Studies, and assisting my Minister with work.
You may not have seen me as much in Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, but that’s because I’ve been working hard to best represent you in Ottawa.
Local Consultations: Climate Change and the Environment
The seven MPs for York Region have begun hosting larger consultations to focus on specific issues that Canadians have identified as important. We have started hosting larger consultations to include more voices from our entire York Region community.
We hosted a consultation on Bill C-14 (Medical Assistance in Dying) last month and we just hosted a consultation on Climate Change and the environment a few weeks ago. I would like to personally thank Deb Schulte, MP for King-Vaughan, who led the consultation as she is the Chair for the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.
Although I was unable to attend, as I had to attend to Parliamentary business in Ottawa, I was very happy to receive feedback from many constituents. Thank you to those of you who contacted me with your concerns. I will work closely with MP Schulte to ensure everyone’s concerns are heard.
This consultation will not be the last, as our government is committed to open and transparent discussions with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
I am excited to announce that I will be leading the next public consultation which will be focused on the Defence Policy Review. Please stay tuned for more information on that in the coming weeks.

Funding Update: Canada Summer Jobs
I am thrilled to announce that all organizations in Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill that applied through the Canada Summer Jobs Program received funding! There are 226 summer jobs that are being funded in our area. This represents an increase, highlighting our commitment to improving youth employment by investing an additional $113 million per year for the Summer Jobs Program.

Parliamentary Secretary Work:

Canada Post
As Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), the Minister responsible for Canada Post, I am glad to announce that the Government of Canada will be conducting an independent review of Canada Post to ensure Canadians receive quality postal services at a reasonable price.
Canadians from coast to coast to coast will have a say in the services they value and want. This review will have two phases: An independent Task Force, which will gather facts, conduct analysis and come up with viable options for postal service in Canada, then, phase two, a parliamentary committee (The Committee I oversee) will consult Canadians on the options and make recommendations to the Government on the future of Canada Post.
Please also stay tuned for a local York Region Consultation on Canada Post, which will be hosted sometime this summer.

Canada’s Defence Industry
In my role as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, I attended CANSEC, which is Canada’s global defence and security trade show. With hundreds of companies and thousands of people in attendance, this is an incredible showcase for the leadership and innovation that our industry demonstrates in the defence sector. The Minister of Public Services and Procurement is responsible for all government procurement, including defence procurements like the purchasing of ships, planes, and defence equipment. The Minister is also mandated to review Procurement Modernization so that when our government purchases ships and planes, we ensure that the government is receiving quality goods in a cost-effective manner. I will continue assisting the Minister with this endeavour and encourage you to give your input at the upcoming Defence Policy Review I will be leading in York Region.

Local Events: Aurora Street Festival June 5!
I hope to see everyone out in the sunshine on Sunday, June 5 at the Aurora Street Festival! My team and I will be out on Yonge Street to talk you about the services our office can assist you with, and answer any questions you may have for me.
