Chamber calls on businesses to support Fort Mac

Watching the news unfold surrounding the fire in Fort McMurray has been devastating for the Board of Directors and staff at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, as it has been for the local community and everyone across the country.

Wildfires continue to rage through the northern Alberta town, destroying homes and businesses. To date, more than 80,000 people have been evacuated, 1,600 structures have been destroyed and all of the major businesses have closed. The destruction continues to mount.

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce has made a donation to the Chamber Relief Trust Fund through the Alberta Chamber of Commerce, as we believe it is imperative to support members of the Fort McMurray business community in this time of crisis.

Money collected through this fund will go directly to the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce to ensure that local jobs and the economy can be revived as quickly as possible.

We encourage members of the local business community to join us in supporting the Fort McMurray businesses who have been devastated by the fire. Please visit our website at aurorachamber.on.ca for information on how to make a donation or call the Chamber at 905-727-7262 for details.

Donations can also be made to the Canadian Red Cross. Bell, Rogers, and Telus mobility customers can text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5, or text REDCROSS to 45678 to donate $10, with the donation amount being deducted from the customer's next bill. Visit redcross.ca to discover more ways to help. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the federal government will match individual donations made to the Canadian Red Cross to support those affected. Every dollar counts!

Our hearts go out to the residents and business community impacted by the wildfires in Fort McMurray. In times of crisis, it is particularly vital to extend compassion and goodwill toward our fellow Canadians. Please join us in doing what you can to help.

Javed S. Khan, Chair

Aurora Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
