Saints fall short in rugby season opener

By Jake Courtepatte

The St. Andrew's College Saints dropped a close one to Appleby College in the season opener of the CISAA's highest level of rugby competition.

Hosting the Blue Dogs last Wednesday, the senior Saints played catch-up throughout the match, keeping the score within a converted try right up until the final minute. Appleby eventually came away with a 29 – 14 victory.

Scoring for the Saints were Ian Maclean, Nils Plinkert, and James Michaelis.

The U16 team squeaked past St. Michael's College in an away game the same day, pulling off a 24 – 21 victory in their CISAA season opener.

Next up for the senior squad is a home matchup against Upper Canada College, in what is already their second meeting of the year, with Upper Canada knocking the Saints out of the CAIS National Tournament in Brentwood, B.C. earlier this month.

The Saints showed some positive signs in the elite tournament, besting both West Island College of Alberta and Ashbury College of Ottawa.

They also topped St. Maximilian Kolbe of Aurora in a closely-contested exhibition match earlier this season.

In the 52-year history of the program, Saints rugby has had over 20 championship seasons, recently earning the CISAA championship title in 2013. The Saints fell short of a finals berth in the 2015 season, falling to Trinity College School in the semifinal match.
