Resident disagrees with Mavrinac assessment

So, here we are again with more reports on land use for the Mavrinac Lands.

While excited about the town's success to win the legal battle to purchase the Mavrinac Land, I was extremely disappointed in the consultant's report and recommendations for its use.

For the folks who live on this end of town, and especially for those who do not (most of you), you may or may not be aware that this part of town has plenty of parks and kids play-sets, splash pads, for the wee residents and fields behind and next to the schools to support potential soccer activities.

This is what the consultant so accurately pointed out in his report.

Good observation, my dear sir.

What he failed to notice, is that this neighbourhood does not have is any parkland or greenspace (forested/trees) for the older residents – and I mean anyone older than 12 (tweens, teens, adults, elderly).

If you look at the western end of Aurora (anywhere west of Yonge actually), you can count lots of greenspace with the walking paths and park benches to stop and sit and contemplate, basketball and tennis courts and things where you see teenagers and adults out enjoying public greenspace and parkland as well.

A good example is on Orchard Heights near Bathurst (Summit Park) where they have a great space for both tennis courts as well as a couple of basketball courts.

We don't need a space where people would be driving to (like another soccer field or baseball diamond) that would support leagues; we need a space in the area over here that local residents can walk to, something here too for the older kids, young adults, and/or young at heart parents who want to get out there and play some tennis or shoot some hoops (with their friends, spouse or their older kids, the kids who don't want to be near swing sets and toddler splash pads, anymore).

There are lots of things to do with the wee kids, not so much teens and young adults.

There is enough space, even if you have to put in a buffer of trees and bushes between the courts and the neighbouring homes.

You could even throw in some park benches so that our elderly have a quiet place to walk to and enjoy some trees!

There is NOTHING here on this side of Aurora that is even close to the beautiful meandering pathways that we have just east of Bathurst running south from St John's.

I lived on the west end of town for 17 years and have been here on this end for four having downsized. Trust me, there is a lot more to do around the old ‘hood and here is an opportunity to provide more active space for this newer neighbourhood.

With all of the new subdivisions also going in and the road going to cut over from our area over to Leslie, it is still walkable and bikeable with a tennis racquet or basketball in hand to get over to the Mavrinac land to play some tennis or hoops with your pals or your parents.

And maybe granny might have a nice place to walk and sit on a park bench next to some lovely new trees that have been planted as a buffer to the homes.

Please give this some thought.
