MP’S REPORT: It’s an honour

By Kyle Peterson, MP
Newmarket-Aurora

First of all, I want to take the opportunity to thank the great people of Aurora and Newmarket for electing me and allowing me the honour and privilege to serve in Ottawa as your Member of Parliament. I look forward to the challenge. Just as importantly, I want to extend my appreciation to Lois Brown, her family and her staff, for serving our community with commitment and integrity since first being elected in 2008. Thank you.
I am excited about the prospects both for our community and Canada over the upcoming years. I was proud to run a campaign that was focused on hope and hard work. I was equally as proud to be a part of the positive campaign that our new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, conducted.
I have spoken with many of you since election day and you have shared your optimism for a positive vision for Canada. We have a cabinet of very talented ministers that I know will serve Canadians well, and I look forward to working with them.
I appreciate The Auroran providing this column to me. Going forward, I will use this column as a means to discuss not only the important issues of the day and key policies, but also to add some insight and perhaps a glimpse or two what life is like as a Member of Parliament from a personal perspective.
For instance, on November 12, I was officially sworn-in at the House of Commons in Ottawa.
Every Member of Parliament must be sworn-in before being able to take their seat in the House of Commons for the current session, even those who were re-elected. We all must swear an oath to the Queen, and then sign the roll book. Every Member since 1867 has done so, and I couldn’t help but feel somewhat overwhelmed by the ceremony, especially being surrounded by my family and friends who had worked so hard on the campaign.
It was truly a memorable day for me on a personal level, and having my wife Andrea and older son, Kolton, with me made it all the more so.
I also thought it would be important to use this first column to tell you know what you can expect from me as your Member of Parliament. I have lived in or near this community for most of my life. I am raising my family here and, like you am passionate about Aurora (and Newmarket). I hope that the passion will be reflected in my daily work.
I look forward to working closely with Mayor Dawe and all of Aurora Council, together with my new co-MP from Aurora, Leona Alleslev and our MPP Chris Ballard. I know they all share my commitment to the Town, and a desire to serve. I also know that we will be able to work in a collaborative manner to get work done.
You have my commitment that I will be a strong voice for you in Ottawa. Once established, our local constituency office will serve as a hub to assist you with your needs relating to the federal government. I will continue to participate in many local events, and you will have many opportunities to share your thoughts and opinions on the issues that matter to you most. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Finally, we campaigned on an ambitious agenda for Canada, and I am most excited about rolling out this agenda. I am confident that you will see in my office and in the Government a caring and compassionate approach. In the next few days I will be announcing the location of our local Constituency Office. I have also been hiring staff that will be there to serve you. In the meantime, I can be reached via email at Kyle.Peterson@parl.gc.ca. Again, thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving.
