The Aurora High School Eagles girls’ varsity basketball team was able to stomp a comeback from the Keswick Cougars on Monday to stay undefeated in YRAA action.

Holding their opponents to less than thirty points in each of their seven wins so far this season, the Eagles were able to box out their opponents in the first quarter, forcing outside shots that proved unsuccessful.

They jumped out to a 10 – 1 lead to start the contest, marked by two three-pointers within the first five minutes. Another three in the final minute of the first quarter gave the Eagles a dominating 15- 3 lead heading into the first intermission.

A timeout by the 2 – 5 Cougars at the start of the second quarter slowed the Eagles’ pace, evening up the play for a 21- 10 Aurora lead after the first half.

They once again dominated the third quarter, allowing only one shot from the field and a free throw into their basket. The Eagles opened up a 29 – 13 lead before the fourth and final quarter, marked by a last-second rebound at the buzzer.

Another timeout by the Cougars in the fourth put the quarter in their possession, at one point closing the gap to just seven points. But the differential proved to be enough, as the Eagles hung on to a 33 – 21 victory to end their season.

With the win, the Eagles finish the regular season holding onto a perfect 8 – 0 record, finishing atop the YRAA’s North division. Their 101 point differential throughout the season was the highest of the league’s 35 schools.

The Eagles are one of three teams to finish the year undefeated, accompanying both St. Joan of Arc and St. Robert.

They are yet to learn their opponent for the opening game of the playoff bracket later this week.
