Bring out the bunting, says resident

(Re: Brock’s Banter. July 9, 2015)

I was just reading your recent edition of The Auroran in which you wrote about Aurora’s celebration of Canada Day 2015, and of the coming 150th anniversary of Confederation in two years.
I was tempted to write you last week on this subject, or I should say on the subject of “bunting.”
On July 1, my dog, Monty and I walked around the block we normally take in the morning for our walk.
It’s called Millciff Circle.
What caught my eye was one balcony that was decorated beautifully in flowers and bunting celebrating Canada Day. I don’t know the family, but it was the only house in our whole neighbourhood that was decorated.
There were a few small flags, but little to catch the eye. By contrast, you should see it at Hallowe’en!
My point is that we are not in the habit of putting up bunting. When I was a child living in a small town in Newfoundland our annual summer parade meant that all the houses were decked in red, white and blue. The parade was small, but it always felt like a real celebration.
It might be something to think about and encourage for our next Canada Day, and for our 150th celebration.
