34-year-old man charged in stabbing of two teens

By Brock Weir

A 34-year-old Aurora man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following the stabbings of two local teens on Saturday morning, which left one boy in life threatening condition.

Christopher Barry was identified and arrested in Cobourg over the weekend, and also charged with Break and Enter, before making his first court appearance on Monday. The charges have not been proven.

Police were called to an incident on Briardale Place near McClellan Way in southwest Aurora at approximately 9 a.m. on September 10. There, they found two 16-year-old boys suffering injuries.

“The investigation has revealed that the male suspect broke into the residence and a struggle ensued,” said Constable Laura Nicolle of the York Regional Police on Monday. “The suspect was identified and arrested in the Cobourg area with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police.”

At the time police responded to the call, one of the boys was taken to hospital suffering life threatening injuries while the other was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

While Constable Nicolle told The Auroran they would not disclose whether Mr. Barry is known to police as the YRP believes it could be “tainting the court case by portraying the person” in a certain way, she said it was “possible” that he was known to the two victims.

“Not in a close way, but it does appear the accused resided nearby so they may have known each other in that context,” she said.

A motive is still under investigation and the accused was set to appear in court once again this Wednesday at press time.

In the early stages of the investigation, it was thought by Police that two unknown male suspects entered the residence, according to Constable Andy Pattenden of the YRP. Police now believe the suspect acted alone.

“A struggle ensued and the victims were injured as a result of being struck with weapons,” he said at the time.

Police soon contained the area and fanned out to locate suspects, but came up empty. While no suspects were found in the immediate vicinity, Police advised area residents they did not believe there was a continued risk in the neighborhood.

The investigation continues and police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to come forward to investigators.
